Praia da Amoreira, which we particularly recommend for families, lies in the hilly coastal landscape of the western Algarve region. On the vast area of sand, where couples and singles will also be able to snag themselves a quiet spot, you will find an estuary, plus two restaurants, a massage pavilion and a surf school. The substantially warmer water of the small lagoons that form at low tide is ideal for children to splash about and have fun in. Whilst Praia da Amoreira does have lots of visitors, because of its size it never feels crowded.
Praia da Amoreira - A diverse family beach on the west coast of the Algarve
Praia da Amoreira, which stretches over a length of 580 metres, lies on Portugal's breezy west coast. The unspoiled surroundings are slightly hilly. Rocks border the wide sandy beach on the right and left. There are several caves to explore in the left-hand cliff face.
Since a river also flows into the sea here, Praia Amoreira protrudes quite far inland. The broad expanse of sand, which is bordered by dunes at the back, provides plenty of space for families. However, couples and singles will like it here too and are sure to find a quiet spot to relax. Several small lagoons that form at low tide are ideal for children to swim and paddle in. The estuary also offers a warmer and quieter alternative to the inclement Atlantic water.
The beach area itself is dotted with a few rocks. Here in the middle of the bay you have to pay particular attention to the current when bathing as it can be very strong in places. At the right and left end of the beach you will find two popular restaurants that serve a wide selection of food and drinks.
On the broad beach area sun umbrellas provide pleasant shade. There are no loungers to hire here, but you can treat yourself to a massage right on the beach. In addition the surf school, Atlantic Riders, offers surfing, kitesurfing and SUP tours. From personal experience, we can vouch for the fact that Praia da Amoreira is particularly good for beginners. You will find the best conditions for surfing are at high tide.
