Summary of the Beach Inspectors
Impressive rock formations are a prominent feature of the scenery at Praia Marinha. At the back of the beach the lovely fine sandy surface is bordered by a steep rock face, and in the water there are islands resembling stone towers. In between, on the sand and in the water, are chunks of rock, large and small, creating a natural adventure park for kids of all ages. On the beach there are caves you can explore, and excursion boats set out from here, giving you a chance to see the coast from the water.

Praia Marinha - Naturally beautiful sandy beach in a striking rocky setting

On the Atlantic, on the south coast of the Algarve, between the small Portuguese towns of Benagil and Vale de Engenhos, you will find the beach of Praia Marinha. It's quite isolated and there are only a few houses nearby. The route is well signposted, and as soon as you reach the car park, you'll know you've arrived. From up here you have a wonderful vista over the white sandy beach, beautifully framed between light rocks, overgrown with green, and the shimmering blue of the sea.

The steps down are wide and well-constructed but inclined to be slippery - be careful! Once you get down to the beach, the view is even more impressive. A steep ochre and grey rock face runs all the way along the right-hand edge of the one kilometre long, fine sandy surface. In the water at the far end, a group of tall rocky islands towers alongside a formation shaped like a double-arched bridge. Large stones lie scattered in the water and on the beach. In places you have to climb over them to get to the hindmost parts of the beach.

In the height of summer Praia Marinha beach is busy. The wider section at the front gets the fullest. You'll find lots of families here, and there is also a restaurant with a shady terrace. Apart from that the beach is completely undeveloped. At the back you can scramble about and swim among the rocks. Here and there you can jump into the water, and it's great for snorkelling and diving. Or you might like to seek out a secluded romantic spot. There are caves to explore here, as well, plus boat trips that set out from the beach to visit the attractions along this stretch of the coastline.
