Praia Quinta do Lago - A spacious family beach in a large natural park near Faro
This spacious dune beach is located west of the Portuguese coastal town of Faro in the south of the Algarve. From there it will take you about half an hour by car. Before you cross the sand dunes via the 300 metre long boardwalk you can park your car, for a charge, in a big car park.
Praia Quinta do Lago is part of the large Ria Formosa Natural Park. This extensive swamp landscape dominated by the tides is home to numerous water birds and other animals and a nature trail gives amazing insights into the diversity of its flora and fauna. The flat landscape surrounding the beach is moderately developed. You will find a few villas, hotels, golf courses and tennis courts here, as well as a riding school.
The wide sandy beach of Praia Quinta do Lago is almost three kilometres long, and its fine white gently sloping sand entices you into the water. A small beach bar called Koko will provide you with drinks, cocktails and snacks. Just in front of the dunes there is a well-known fish restaurant by the name of Gigi. Here you can enjoy fresh seafood and delicious fish specialities with a view of the sea. The prices at Praia Quinta do Lago are relatively high, as the clientele is rather more exclusive than on some other beaches. In the summer months a great many families come here, so it can get very full and hectic. If you prefer a bit more tranquillity, a short walk will find you a secluded spot amongst the dunes.
The wide range of facilities on offer at Praia Quinta do Lago is rounded off by a broad palette of water sports activities. As long as you're not bothered by the noise from the nearby airport, you'll find that this family beach has very good conditions for windsurfing and kiting and the waves are always good enough for surfing novices too. In addition, you can hire banana boats, canoes, parasails, pedal boats and stand up paddle boards.
