Situated on a small hill and surrounded by vineyards, the village of Lagoa is has still kept its original character for its 6,000 inhabitants. It is located only just under a quarter of an hour by car from Portimão and is situated at the heart of the Algarve between breath-taking beaches next to the azure blue Atlantic Ocean and the mountain range of Serra de Monchique on the horizon. As with many places at the Algarve, the coastal area of Lagoa with its wonderful beaches has been extensively developed into a popular tourist area since the 1960s. However, Lagoa village has still kept its local charm with its small squares and whitewashed houses, which are typical of the region, making a well-kept and tidy impression. As a very traditional Algarve location, Lagoa can look back on a very long and colourful history. It was originally an ancient settlement on fertile marshlands which has been heavily influenced to this day by the Arab expansion. The nicely laid-out gardens and the monastery of the Saint Joseph convent in the centre are sights the village is especially proud of.
There is a very good choice of hotels in and around Lagoa, from the family-friendly B&B through to the luxurious spa resort with a golf course. Along this stretch of coast you will find nearly all kinds of accommodation. Lagoa has become known nationally mainly for its culture and craft market, the FATACIL. This unique Algarve market which has taken place every August since 1982 has many stalls, an impressive horse show and street artists and musicians. These days the market attracts many visitors from all over the world and is an ideal opportunity to get to know more about the culture of this region and to sample the wine which is harvested and produced here. You can of course enjoy the wine all year round in one of the cosy little bars in the centre of Lagoa - perfect for a romantic dinner for two!
However, Lagoa it is not just about culinary delights and culture. Along the coast stretches Percurso dos Sete Vales Suspensos, one of the best hiking trails to explore the unique steep cliffs and beaches. Here you can go for a three to four hour walk and discover at close hand the wide variety of nature while looking at the beaches and hidden bays of this coastal area. Many of the beaches of Lagoa are real gems of the Algarve, for example Praia do Canavial with its white soft sand and turquoise water and Praia do Carvalho und Praia dos Tremoços, where you can find rock arches and cliffs which form a striking contrast to the azure blue Atlantic Ocean.
