Praia dos Caneiros - A wide, sandy, rather exclusive beach framed by high rock faces
A fairly long car journey through the low-lying hilly landscape of the southern Algarve brings you to Praia dos Caneiros. It's about 15 minutes from Lagoa. The wide sandy beach is on the eastern side of this stretch of the coastline, which is divided by the mouth of the Rio Arade. The free sections of the road leading to the beach are used for parking, and can get very full at peak season.
Praia dos Caneiros is well equipped. Right at the entrance you will find public toilets, changing cabins and a snack and cocktail bar. This belongs to the only restaurant on the beach. In addition to its exclusive lounger service, Restaurante Rei das Praias, a classy establishment constructed on stilts, serves fresh fish and pasta dishes in a stylish setting with a view of the sea. The evening events in peak season are a firm favourite with younger visitors in particular.
From the restaurant a short set of wooden steps leads down to the light sandy beach, which is 180 metres long and is surrounded by high rock faces. Down towards the sea several impressive grottos have formed.
Praia dos Caneiros is a relatively wide sandy beach which offers services such as beach beds, Thai massages, lifeguards, and pedal boats and canoes for hire. During the mornings you will encounter lots of families with children here, whereas the visitor crowd gets quite a bit younger towards evening. A huge rock towers up out of the cool Atlantic water, which can be affected by strong currents. At low tide you can get to another, somewhat smaller, sandy bay to the west. Since this is less accessible it offers greater tranquillity.
