Praia de Odeceixe lies surrounded by a spectacular, and almost completely unspoiled rocky landscape at the north-west end of the Algarve region. The fine, pink sandy beach protrudes a long way inland and at low tide the area doubles in size. A river, which families with children use for bathing, flows into the sea at the back of the bay. It's mainly surfers and experienced swimmers that let off steam in the cold Atlantic water, with its somewhat dangerous currents. There is a restaurant and a surf school in a small settlement above the rocks.
Praia de Odeceixe - Not just a beach, an attraction!
Far up in the north-west of the Algarve, craggy cliff faces tower a few metres into the sky along the rugged Atlantic coast. They form the bay of Praia de Odeceixe, a 330 metre long, fine sandy beach. At low tide you can get to the small, peaceful neighbouring beach of Praia das Adegas at the left hand side, which is very popular with naturists.
Apart from a few houses on a hill and the road that leads here the bay is completely unspoiled. A river also flows into the sea here. A set of wooden steps brings you down onto the light pink sand. Lots of families with small children in particular settle down to bathe at the back of this huge area of shore, which has plenty of room and seems almost infinite at low tide. They prefer the shallow, significantly warmer water of the river to the rough, cold Atlantic sea. But even here the current should not be underestimated. As a result, three lifeguards keep a careful eye on things in the bathing season, which runs from 1 June to 30 September. Unfortunately camping and dogs are not allowed here.
The strong north wind and the waves make the beach a surfer's paradise. The conditions here are ideal, particularly from September onwards. Whether you're a beginner or advanced surfer, Odeceixe Surf School rents out equipment and provides courses. Praia de Odexeice is also popular with families and older people, although the beach is not wheelchair accessible. The breathtaking view from Esplanada do Mar Restaurant is a sight worth seeing. With its Portuguese cuisine it has been popular with its regular customers for generations.
