Praia Armona - An unspoiled sandy beach for long walks
Praia Armona is situated in the west of Ilha da Armona, which is part of a small group of islands not far from Faro, the capital of the Algarve. The low-lying sand dune island, which can be reached by ferry from Olhão in about 30 minutes, is part of Ria Formosa Natural Park and extends over a length of about nine kilometres.
After you've made your way through the channels of this unique lagoon by ferry, you disembark on the quay in the little settlement of Armona. This extends along the entire west coast of the island and has about 1000 permanent residents who live mainly from the fish trade. Their boats anchored on the broad area of sand at low tide create a very special backdrop. The tides have an enormous impact on this small island. At low tide you can find lots of bathers between the boats, wanting to explore all the things the sea has left behind on the sand.
The light sandy beach of Praia Armona is divided into two sections. In the north lies the part facing the Portuguese mainland, which is called Praia Armona Ría and has lots of restaurants and snack bars. However, the atmosphere here is not very inviting.
We recommend you that you take the one and a half kilometre footpath through the settlement and the dune landscape to Praia Armona Mar. This spacious, large beach area extends along the south side of the island, which faces the sea. To the east several kilometres of secluded dune beach stretch out in front of you. From here you can walk to the neighbouring beach, Praia da Fuseta. As well as an almost infinite-seeming beach landscape, this southern section of Praia da Armona Mar has a nice beach bar, which serves up drinks, delicious cocktails and regular party nights. At Santo António restaurant you can expect tasty dishes and friendly service, along with a fantastic vista.
Families and many older people appreciate the idyllic Praia Armona, away from the usual tourist centres. Apart from them you'll mainly encounter locals, day-trippers and independent tourists who are staying in one of the bungalows on the island's campsite. After a session of kitesurfing or windsurfing you can look forward to plenty of rest and relaxation on the unspoiled island beach of Praia Armona.
