Hardly anyone makes the effort to search out the small bay of Praia da João de Arens to go sunbathing and cool off in the Atlantic. This makes the beach all the more worth a visit for anyone looking for peace and solitude away from the large holiday resorts of the Algarve. Nature rewards you with a spectacular landscape of imposing cliff faces. If you can do without any kind of beach infrastructure and bring your own provisions with you, the completely natural, unspoiled bay is perhaps the ideal destination for a relaxed time at the beach.
Praia de João de Arens - Tucked away between spectacular cliffs
The small bay of Praia de João de Arens is almost completely enclosed by an imposing cliff face. The rock extends into the sea on both sides of the beach, sheltering it from the wind and currents.
Its secluded position amidst a rugged cliff landscape makes getting to the beach something of a challenge. Praia de João de Arens is situated in an undeveloped area in the south-western part of the Algarve, approximately six kilometres from the centre of Portimão. Not only is it impossible to park your car right by the beach, you also have to allow for a long, and in places difficult, walk across the rocks. But once you have found the hidden bay, nature will reward you with fantastic scenery, peace and seclusion.
Only a very small number of people find their way to the beach, which also features soft sand and calm waters. You will find a few shady spots right in front of the rock face, but otherwise you'll need to bring your sun umbrella with you. The same is true for provisions, as Praia da João de Arens doesn't have any kind of infrastructure.
It's worth taking a walk to explore the rocky landscape immediately surrounding the beach. The formations create fantastic natural scenery and range from holes in the rocks to natural gateways in the stone.
