Families with children like coming to this beach on the southern coast of the Algarve. Here, where the Rio Arade empties into the sea, they find the conditions perfect for a relaxing day at the beach. The 110 metre long, easily accessible sandy beach is bordered by interesting rock caves and grottos and monitored by a lifeguard. A restaurant serves cool refreshments accompanied by a glorious view of the sea. It's not only the unusual rock caves that invite exploration. Experienced divers will be delighted to discover the several sunken shipwrecks in the bay.
Praia do Pintadinho - Peaceful family beach with lots of rock caves
The small sandy beach of Praia do Pintadinho lies in the south of the Algarve, at the spot where the Rio Arade empties into the sea. It fits snugly into the low-lying hilly landscape, just north of a small promontory with a lighthouse on it.
After crossing the car park, go past Restaurante Pintadinho and through a narrow entrance onto the 110 metre long sandy beach. Behind the long Rio Arade jetty to the north you will be able to make out the town of Portimão and its marina. On the right and left hand sides of Praia do Pintadinho are numerous caves and grottos of various sizes. Even at high tide the large cave in the northern rock face is accessible through two big rock arches.
Pintadinho beach is a popular bathing spot for families with children. It is compact and has gently shelving access to the water and good infrastructure. These factors, together with the caves and grottos to explore, make the beach an ideal family outing. Lifeguards take care of bathers' safety. In the single restaurant you can enjoy a beautiful view of the sea along with a refreshing drink or ice cream.
Although you won't find any water sports operators at Praia do Pintadinho, experienced divers will be delighted to discover the several sunken wrecks that have found their last resting place on the seabed here.
