Praia do Vau - Well equipped beach with glowing red cliffs
When the sun is shining the crumbling rock face here radiates an intense red glow, capturing everyone's attention. In combination with the light-coloured sand and deep blue Atlantic water this creates a wonderful natural backdrop. The small cove of Praia do Vau is a popular beach in the south-west of the Algarve. It is in the middle of an area that is only loosely developed, three and a half kilometres from the town centre of Portimão, one of the major tourist centres in the south of Portugal.
Praia do Vau is easy to reach by car, as the route is signposted and there are free parking spaces on the access road. The middle of the beach is next to some fairly small apartment complexes. The broad expanse of sand provides plenty of room for children to let off steam, and there are some places where you can rent sun loungers and umbrellas. In summer it's really busy. Families come here to relax, as do couples of all ages. There are several restaurants serving mainly typical Portuguese dishes, and from the terraces of the bars there is a great view across the beach to the open sea.
On Praia do Vau beach there is also a pedal boat hire facility and you can rent equipment for stand up paddle boarding. From this beach two other bays are within easy walking distance, and there you will find some privacy and can relax in the peace and quiet.
