On a craggy stretch of coast, south of the holiday centre of Portimão, lies the soft sandy surface of the small bay of Praia dos Careanos. Here you can marvel at cave and rock arches, relax on your beach towel or sun lounger and cool off in the bracing but calm Atlantic water. There is a tiny wooden kiosk with a bar which will provide you with snacks and drinks.
Praia dos Careanos - Small cove with a tiny snack bar
From natural rock arches and caves to cliffs towering up out of the water, the small beach of Praia dos Careanos has lots to offer. But of course you can come here simply to relax, soak up the sun and cool off in the bracing Atlantic water.
Just four kilometres separate this beach, situated in a relatively undeveloped area, from the town centre of Portimão, one of the major holiday centres in the Algarve. On the coast road above the cliffs you will find plenty of parking for your car, and you can then head down to the beach via a set of steps.
There's a tiny wooden kiosk which will provide you with drinks and snacks and somewhere to sit, and will rent you sun loungers and umbrellas if you need them, but apart from this Praia dos Careanos beach has no infrastructure. The soft sand of the beach nestles snugly against the steep cliffs typical of the region, which create a fabulous natural backdrop. Along the clifftops at either end you can get to the neighbouring beaches of Praia do Amado to the east and Praia do Vau to the west.
Praia dos Careanos is never overcrowded, even in peak season. Visitors to the beach include families in particular, but also couples from every age group who just want to relax in the sun and are happy to forgo the amenities associated with mass tourism.
