The beach of Ilha de Tavira is situated in the south of the Algarve in the far east of Tavira Island, which can be reached from the mainland on a small boat. The short walk to the beach leads you through a small holiday complex and a campsite with shops and restaurants. On the wide sandy surface of Ilha de Tavira you will find numerous loungers and beach umbrellas, two snack bars and a water sports operator. As well as jet skis and banana boats it offers a particularly attractive highlight - a floating assault course on the water. Lots of families with children enjoy the huge variety on offer.
Ilha de Tavira - The most popular beach on the island, especially good for families with children
Ilha de Tavira is one of four beaches on Tavira Island. It is situated in the far east of Tavira Island and extends along the sea-facing side, which is part of Ria Formosa Natural Park. This consists of numerous sand dunes off the Portuguese coast and a hugely diverse lagoon landscape, which has been under conservation since 1987.
Ria Channel separates the island from the mainland, and you can cross it quickly on one of the small boats from Quatro Aguas quayside, to the south of Tavira. From the landing place, which is located on the river side of the island, you have to walk a few minutes to get to the actual beach. En route you cross a small holiday complex and a campsite. Right next to the beach there are various tourist facilities such as souvenir and other shops, sanitary facilities and restaurants.
On the stretch of beach in front of the campsite you can hire sun loungers, sunbeds and beach umbrellas in peak season. The sandy beach of Ilha de Tavira, which is over two kilometres long, also has showers and is wheelchair accessible via boardwalks. The wide beach is bordered to the east by a breakwater, on which a pretty little lighthouse stands. To the west the strip of sand gets narrower and there are fewer bathers. Here you will find peace and seclusion and you can even walk to the neighbouring beach, Praia da Terra Estreita.
During the summer months Ilha de Tavira is extremely popular with families with children. Many Portuguese spend their summer holidays here, as do holidaymakers from other European countries. The flat dune beach has a lot to offer. Right on the beach is Xiri Beach Bar, which will supply you with snacks and drinks and entice you to dance to hot Latino rhythms. A massage pavilion is linked to another small snack bar where you can treat yourself to ice cream and soft drinks. The highlight for children is probably the floating assault course a few metres out to sea. Tickets for this and other water sports such as banana boating, jet skiing and sports boats can be obtained from the Aquafun centre right on the beach.
Whether it's a family holiday or a day trip, there's really nothing to stop you enjoying a fantastic day's bathing on Ilha de Tavira beach.
