This spot, which is popular with young families, lies in the south of the Algarve on Tavira Island, which can be reached in summer and winter via a floating footbridge. Praia do Barril is busy but not overcrowded and you can spend a relaxed day taking long walks to the other three beaches on the island, or enjoy the culinary delicacies in one of the charming bars and restaurants that are housed in the old fishing buildings.
Praia do Barril - Friendly island beach with enticing historic charm
The journey to the island beach of Praia do Barril might be a bit long, but like the beach itself, it is something quite special. To get to Tavira Island, you have to park your car at the far end of the Southern Portuguese settlement of Pedras de El-Rei. From there a floating footbridge leads across one of the Ria Channels. Once you get to the island, a roughly one kilometre walk lies between you and the beach. Alternatively, you can travel there on a little local railway.
Once you get to the beach the first thing you'll see are the old fishermen’s cottages. The charming whitewashed structures and former storage buildings house small souvenir shops and restaurants. They tell the story of this place, where everything once revolved around tuna fishing.
From here a little wooden pathway leads to the beach, which stretches over two and a half kilometres in the middle of the island. The gently sloping sand and comparatively warm water make Praia do Barril a popular destination for young families. In July and August, they run around having fun on the fine, light sandy beach, which is inviting all year round.
Praia do Barril has excellent infrastructure. There are public toilets, showers, lifeguards and a small water sports operator with pedal boats and canoes. You can treat yourself to culinary delights in the Blue Beach Bar or Museu do Atum Restaurant. As well as a charming atmosphere you will find a wide range of delicious food and drinks, plus information about the history of this enchanting place.
