On the south-western edge of Europe you'll find Praia do Castelejo - a beach that can only be reached after an exciting drive through the hilly Portuguese landscape. You can spend a day by the rugged, rocky coast and feast your senses at this natural, unspoiled spot. The high swell in the Atlantic is ideal for surfers. There is a surf school, which also offers courses for beginners and hires out the appropriate equipment. A restaurant provides both small and more substantial snacks.
Praia do Castelejo - Natural idyll on the south-western edge of Europe
Praia do Castelejo beach lies not at all far from the south-westernmost point of Europe. A winding route leads you through an imposing hilly landscape to this bathing spot. Drive carefully - the roads are narrow and the gorges are deep. Once you've overcome the first hurdle, you have to negotiate a risky parking manoeuvre in peak season. This is because there are only a few parking spaces and lots of cars park right on the road.
The view that opens up in front of you makes even this difficulty worthwhile. You can spend a really special day here at this Praia, almost on the very edge of Europe. The wide sandy beach is embraced by rugged cliffs. The murmur of the waves is the only music you'll hear. Sun umbrellas, which are available for hire, provide shade from the strong sun and at the entrance you will find a kiosk that sells small snacks like ice cream and chips. The adjacent restaurant serves local dishes at reasonable prices.
If you want to take a swim you should always cast a glance towards the flags. Red means no bathing and is displayed when the waves and the current are too strong. It's these very conditions that make Praia do Castelejo an ideal surfing spot. A local surf school not only hires out equipment but also offers courses.
This beach, in the South West Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park, is perfect for you if you don't fancy the overcrowded beaches in the heart of the tourist resorts. It’s a spot where you can still find a little piece of almost untouched nature.
