Praia do Garrão - Popular sandy beach in a large conservation area
On the Portuguese Algarve there is a stretch of sand approximately 17 kilometres long that extends all the way from the town of Quarteira to the airport at Faro. One beach merges into the next against a background of sand dunes, pine forests and wetland areas. One of these beaches is Praia do Garrão, which is divided into two parts: Praia do Garrão Nascente (the eastern section) and Praia do Garrão Poente (the western section). In between there is a third small section called "Julia’s Beach" after the person who was the first to rent out sun loungers and umbrellas here.
Access to Praia do Garrão beach is either on foot across the sand from the neighbouring beaches or by car, in which case you can leave your vehicle in one of the two parking areas, one by the eastern and one by the western section. There's a boardwalk running all the way along the beach, so you don't have to walk across sand the whole time. Praia do Garrão is only partly barrier-free though, as at some points there are no ramps suitable for wheelchair users.
This beautiful spacious beach of light-coloured sand is approximately a kilometre long. In summer it gets busy, but even then, apart from in the sun lounger rental areas, no one needs to lie right next to anyone else unless they want to. The loungers and sun umbrellas are rented out by the beach bars and restaurants. On Praia do Garrão Nascente especially there are lots of bars and restaurants right on the beach, close to the car park, so you have an enormous choice of places to eat, meals and drinks. One of them is a well-known party location where sunset is celebrated every day. In the zones with sun loungers to rent there are also pavilions offering massages.
You will find two water sports operators on Praia do Garrão. They have a good selection of equipment for the fun sports such as jet skis, banana boats, pedal boats and so on. They don't have equipment for windsurfing, surfing and kiting, although on many days the conditions would be suitable. If you bring your own equipment you can engage in these water sports. Not much diving goes on here, though the beach is suitable for it.
