Playa de Getares - Urban beach in the south of Algeciras
While the outlying foothills of the port city of Algeciras characterise the scene at the northern end of this beach, to the south there is a view of the verdant ridge of hills that reaches far into the sea. In between, a vast area of sand lies along the coast and is a popular place to relax both for holidaymakers and the local population.
Playa de Getares beach is just ten minutes' drive from Algeciras. From here you have a fantastic view of the Rock of Gibraltar, which is only a few kilometres away on the opposite side of the bay. In the northern part a spaciously set out promenade lines the beach, with rows of restaurants and little shops. On the whole the tourist resort looks a bit tired and dated and a few of the restaurants stand empty.
In the summer months it's mainly families that come to the beach. You can learn to windsurf, and hire kayaks and equipment for stand-up paddle boarding from a water sports operator. The weather conditions are good for windsurfing and surfing, especially in winter. At regular intervals you will hear announcements informing you of the time and filling the beach with music.
Playa de Getares is a barrier-free beach. It is equipped with boardwalks and a covered area for wheelchair users, amongst other things. You'll also find showers and toilets here. In the summer months lifeguards keep an eye on safety on the beach.
