Playa de la Misericordia - a quiet urban beach for families and disabled people
“Vamos a la playa!” - if you're staying in Málaga and you hear this, you could, or rather, should end up at Playa de la Misericordia in the south of the beautiful port city. Although the long sandy beach is not as central as Málaga's best known beach, Malagueta, there are quite a few reasons why you shouldn't pass over the diverse Playa de la Misericordia.
It is the favourite amongst residents of the southern residential district of Carretera de Cadiz and has some very special features. The most striking are probably the two huge chimneys that tower into the sky in the former industrial estate and have become cultural monuments. The beach extends over two kilometres along modern, multi-storey rental and apartment buildings and is lined by a nice promenade, which is appealing for jogging, cycling and fitness training. Several fitness trails with various items of sports equipment are available for you to use free of charge. For the gourmets among you there are a number of chiringuitos on the long promenade.
In the stylish Chiringuito la Campana you can order all kinds of tasty fish dishes and grills, as well as excellent drinks and cocktails, which you can enjoy with a view over the sea and the distant port of Málaga. You can spend the whole day lazing pleasantly here on one of the comfy sun beds hired out by the restaurant. You'll also come across Chiringuito Maria in the middle of the beach. In a rustic, but no less enchanting ambience you can indulge in regional delicacies at fair prices. There are numerous beach umbrellas and sun loungers for hire here as well. Restaurante Marisqueria Gutierrez is in the northern section of the beach and prepares fresh fish for you on the open-fire grill. There's also a lounger rental service connected to this restaurant.
Playa de la Misericordia has been awarded the blue flag and has ideal water conditions. Families with children will feel especially at home on its clean, well-kept, dark brown sand, because as well as the relaxed mood that prevails, the beach has a very gentle slope into the warm water. On the broad surface of this beautiful urban beach you will also find numerous patches of grass that invite you to take a pleasant nap beneath magnificent palm trees. Next to them there are several children's play areas, table tennis tables and a football pitch.
A lot of emphasis is placed on wheelchair accessibility at this beach. One section has been adapted for disabled people with separate toilets and changing cabins, access platforms, a covered lounging area and water wheelchairs.
