Playa Los Monteros - sand and pebble beach in an oasis
Playa Los Monteros is situated in the development of Bahia de Marbella on the Costa del Sol in Andalusia. The beach is about two kilometres long and has golden sand with grey pebbles which are exposed at low tide. It has three sections: Río Real, Realejo and La Adelfa. These names derive from the streams and the surrounding nature conservation area, and are well-known to the locals, but you won't find them on the beach signs.
Each section has at least one entrance, where you can park either on the road or directly on the sand. You'll be on the beach in no time at all. It can get a bit more crowded around the entrances, where you will find yourself towel-to-towel with your neighbour. But if you move a bit further on you should definitely be able to find a quieter spot.
The beach is situated in a dune landscape which is home to an unexpectedly large number of plant species. Not only do these provide shade, they also add special character to the beach. The lush greenery makes a pleasant change and is restful on the eyes. You feel as if you're in a seaside oasis.
If you get hungry or thirsty and are in a bit of a hurry, you can simply visit the kiosk, where you will be served without a long wait. Otherwise you'll find several exclusive chiringuitos among the dunes - Spanish beach bars and restaurants. These will be happy to serve you with delicious fish dishes or paella.
There are lifeguards to take care of safety issues. Water sports are not high on the agenda at this beach, so families might be better advised to choose a beach where the children have more opportunity to let off steam. The priorities here are tranquillity, relaxation, intimacy and togetherness.
