Its location next to an industrial port in the bay of Algeciras not only compromises the visual appearance of Playa de Palmones beach, but also makes it a rather uninviting spot on the Andalusian coast. This is due to the loud background noise and the container ships that come and go. The estuary of a small river improves the scenery on the beach a little and you'll also find a convivial chiringuito with a small terrace between palm trees.
Playa de Palmones - between an estuary and a container port
A small river flows into the sea between small sand banks at this beach. To the south you can see low-lying dunes, the silhouette of the port city of Algeciras and the mighty Rock of Gibraltar. However, the other side is adjacent to an industrial area with tall cranes and a container terminal for large freight ships.
The fine sandy beach of Playa de Palmones spreads out on the strip of coast in front of the town of Palmones, seven kilometres from the centre of the port city of Algeciras. Its location at the mouth of the river Rio de las Cañas O Palomes gives the beach fantastic natural scenery in places, however the nearby industrial port compromises both the visual appearance and the atmosphere of this spot. Container ships that are loaded and unloaded here all contribute to the background noise on the beach.
The crowd is largely made up of local people. Families and couples alike come here to cool off in the fresh sea and soak up the sun. The beach's facilities include toilets, sun umbrellas and a play area. In summer there are lifeguards in situ, keeping an eye on safety. In a little chiringuito with a small terrace between a few palm trees you can enjoy fresh fish and homemade desserts, amongst other things.
