The wild, natural, spacious sandy beach of Playa de los Matos is situated in northern Fuerteventura near Corralejo. If you want to escape from the masses of holidaymakers at the more popular beaches, there is plenty room to relax in peace at this beach and to enjoy its natural beauty. However, it is not really suitable for water enthusiasts because of the strong currents and the rocks in the sea.
Playa de los Matos (El Charcon) - Natural beauty in northern Fuerteventura
Playa de los Matos, also known as El Charcon, can be reached by car in about 15 minutes from Corralejo. However, unlike its neighbouring beach of Glassbeach, Playa de los Matos is not situated directly at the road. To get here you have to go through the dunes of a nature reserve.
Giant, coarse rock formations protrude from the sea giving the spacious, sandy beach a wild character. In spite of the otherwise good conditions, surfing is not possible here because of the dangerous rocks. The beach receives only a few visitors who enjoy the shelter of the rocks while listening to the crashing of the waves onto the shore. There are no buildings or amenities at the beach, with the exception of a snack-bar where you can buy refreshments. This can be found at the northern end of the beach, somewhat hidden by the dunes.
