Summary of the Beach Inspectors

Playa El Puertillo, in the north of Gran Canaria, is a thoroughly multifaceted sandy beach which scores points for its two decent-sized natural rock pools on the Punta del Camello section, spectacular black lava rock all around the bay and fabulous sunset. From midday onwards the beach "grows" appreciably, as the sea retreats. And if you fancy just for once discovering what big waves look like close up, a bit later in the day you can confidently swim further out into the bay under the watchful eye of the lifeguards. The waves break on the rocks immediately in front of you here and you'll be drenched by the spray!

Playa El Puertillo - Multifaceted family beach with extra kick!

Playa El Puertillo, or Playa de Bañaderos-El Puertillo, as it is also known, is in the north of Gran Canaria. It's a thoroughly multifaceted sandy beach, which scores points for its two decent-sized natural rock pools, spectacular black lava rock all around the bay and fabulous sunset. Playa El Puertillo is also relatively easy to find. By car you go north on the GC-813 towards Arucas. You can park on the road. Or you can travel to the beach via one of the frequent buses on the number 206 bus route which connects Las Palmas with Playa El Puertillo.

It's really only locals who come to Playa El Puertillo to fish, snorkel, get a tan or just splash around in the water. What's more, Playa El Puertillo is fantastic for diving and experienced surf-riders paddle a bit further out into the bay to catch the good waves as they roll in. The two bathing beaches, which are separated by rocky cliffs, are often called Los Chacones by the locals and are a sure bet for a great afternoon, because the beach "grows" from midday onwards as the sea retreats. And if you fancy just for once discovering what big waves look like close up, a bit later in the day you can confidently swim further out into the bay without putting yourself at the mercy of the great deep. The waves break on the rocks immediately in front of you here and you'll be drenched by the spray!

If you do happen to get into trouble, there are lifeguards all along the beach. In their fluorescent yellow shirts, they are on duty all day and will be happy to come to your aid. Wheelchair users will be particularly enthusiastic because, on the Punta del Camello section of the beach, there are smooth ramps into the two large natural rock pools so that you can get into the water without a problem. The pools are absolutely ideal for everyone who prefers swimming in quieter water! Several small restaurants and a kiosk are open all day on the promenade serving small snacks.
