Playa de la Garita - Conveniently located family beach not far from Las Palmas!

Close to Las Palmas, the urban heart of Gran Canaria, there are countless fantastic beaches to discover, far from the tourist crowds around Maspalomas. In this region you'll find yourself amongst locals and long-term holidaymakers and there is plenty to choose from within walking distance without having to go back to your car. This is exactly what the three beaches of Playa del Hombre, Hoya del Pozo and Playa de la Garita in the south-east of Las Palmas offer! While there's fantastic surfing on Playa del Hombre, the other two bays are great bathing and family beaches where young and old can relax.

From Las Palmas your first port of call is Playa de la Garita, because it's really easy to find. The beach belongs to the resort of La Garita, so at midday when the sun is at its hottest you can walk around the resort and have a bite to eat or buy little souvenirs. From the children's play area to showers and toilets, you'll find everything parents could wish for at this sheltered sandy beach, which slopes gently into the water. Above all, there are plenty of other children for their offspring to play with, without it being too crowded.

The thing that's really special is the well-kept promenade that connects all the beaches along this stretch of coast. At La Garita the promenade features a sculpture of a swimmer and numerous palm trees and there is also a nice beach bar where you can get snacks and drinks at standard local prices. Since all the beaches face east here, the promenade is ideal for early risers too, who can walk or jog here at sunrise. If you speak a little Spanish, or want to learn it, you'll soon feel like a fish in water here amongst the locals!
