Playa de Bocabarranco - Brown sand and stone beach with a natural swimming pool
Playa de Bocabarranco lies in the north of Gran Canaria. The beach, along which a small promenade runs, has brown sand and lots of stones in different colours and sizes. It is bordered by rocks on both sides and on the right, directly behind the rocks, a natural swimming pool has been created. This is because the waves are so high and the current is so strong that swimming in the open sea is prohibited, as indicated by signs and two red flags.
If you want to spread out your towel in a spot where there's access to the water as well, you should choose the edge of the natural swimming pool. There is plenty of space to lie on the concrete surface here and you have a good view of the turbulent sea and the surf.
Although the many rocks make it seem dangerous, a few surfers have fun in the water, plunging boldly into the waves. Right next door is the beach known as Playa del Agujero, which is not a beach in the true sense of the word, but which also has a natural swimming pool. Surfers enjoy the rough sea on this beach as well. Despite the obvious popularity amongst surfers, you can't hire equipment here.
If you're looking for a well-equipped beach, you'll be disappointed by Playa de Bocabarranco. Toilets can only be found in the one restaurant in the area, which is located to the right next to the natural swimming pool, so not directly on the beach. Otherwise, you need to bring with you everything that you'll need for your trip to the beach. If you want to spend a day surfing with the locals off the tourist-beaten track and you're not too bothered about creature comforts then this is just the place.
