Playa del Hombre - Surfing beach for every level of abilityJust like Playa de La Laja in the north, Playa del Hombre, in the east of Gran Canaria, is a genuine surfers' beach. Here, on this level sandy beach, novices and pros alike can have fun in the waves. Playa del Hombre is really easy to find, since it's right next to the small family beach of Hoya del Pozo, which is where you should park. Playa Hoya del Pozo has a decent car park and from there it's only five minutes' walk along the promenade to Playa del Hombre. You surfers will find that you have the water to yourselves though, as the waves tend to be way too big for bathing.
Playa del Hombre is surrounded by homes, which makes it a real ‘locals’ beach’. Just like Playa Hoya del Pozo and Playa de la Garita, it's linked to a really beautiful long promenade shaded at intervals by huge palms. All the way along you will find small items of fitness equipment, so your stroll can easily turn into a keep-fit trail!
But of course the focus at Playa del Hombre is really the water. If you don't have your own surfboard, or if you'd like some surfing lessons, there is a surfing centre which will bring boards and equipment to the beach and teach you to surf on the spot. And if you want to get to know the waves and water a bit better, there's another option: bodyboarders are welcome here too, as they are on most of the surfing beaches on Gran Canaria! The showers right on the beach are just what surfers need. They are useful for rinsing the salt water off your equipment - and for freshening up from time to time. Of course Playa del Hombre is also great for sunbathing, as this wide beach has plenty of room - and even better, peace and quiet. Those of you who are not (yet) surfers can watch the waveriders at work and pick up some tips on the best moves!
