Playa de las Gaviotas
Playa de las Gaviotas in the south-east of Gran Canaria is mainly a location for windsurfers who want to escape the hustle and bustle of the nearby pro-spot, Playa de Pozo Izquierdo. The secluded, unspoiled beach also attracts dog lovers and naturalists, but as a bather you'll have to put up with aircraft noise due to the airport's flight path, and a strong current in the water.

Playa de las Gaviotas - Plenty of space for windsurfers and naturalists

Playa de las Gaviotas in the south-east of Gran Canaria is mainly a location for windsurfers who want to escape the hustle and bustle of the nearby pro-spot, Playa de Pozo Izquierdo. Lots of surf schools come from there as well to give beginners their first lessons in tacking and gybing. The unspoiled beach also attracts dog lovers and naturalists.

Unfortunately the undeveloped Playa de las Gaviotas is rather difficult to find at first, since there are no signs. As a result the beach offers lots of privacy and needless to say, you will mainly encounter 'locals' and windsurfers. With the right geographical coordinates you can find your way from the GC-1 highway to the unpaved car park right next to the beach, along a really poorly constructed country road. On the way you'll predominantly see agricultural land and industrial areas. The beach itself is situated on stony yellow scree fields. This makes Gaviotas unappealing as a bathing beach due to the landscape alone.

On top of this, it is situated beneath one of the airport's flight paths and you also need to watch out for a strong current in the water. Having said that, the beach is rarely crowded, at least half of it is covered in the dark sand typical of Gran Canaria and you can get to the water relatively easily. As a result many naturists find their way here and Playa de las Gaviotas is an ideal spot for beginner and advanced windsurfers as well as dog lovers!
