Playa de Vargas - All yours: plenty of peace and quiet in the midst of nature right by the seaPlaya de Vargas in the east of Gran Canaria is definitely not a bathing beach, but it is something quite special. The very open, long stony beach is completely unspoiled and you can take long walks and fantastic hikes from here. Around the coast there is also a mountain bike trail. Playa de Vargas is really easy to find too, as there is a campsite close by where you can stop off overnight in the midst of nature.
To get here you simply follow signs to Playa de Vargas or the sign pointing to the campsite. Right by the beach there are two well-kept pebbled areas where you can park. From here you can already see the wide natural beach, which consists mainly of large and smaller stones. Because of the strong wind, visitors have made lots of piles of stones to act as windbreaks and you too can spend a lovely quiet afternoon reading here. Getting into the water is really very tricky and is only possible via a set of steps, but visitors don't come to the inky black Playa de Vargas to bathe.
The area surrounding the beach will set nature lovers' hearts racing. Surrounded by medium-height hills, Playa de Vargas is home to a variety of native plants. You can take wonderful walks here and find fantastic subjects for professional photography. As things currently stand, it's mainly peace and seclusion that you will find here, although the trade-off is that you'll have to do without tourist amenities and a bathing area. This is likely to change though, because there are plans to create a windsurfing zone and a bathing zone on the beach with wooden platforms to lie on.
