Playa de Veril - Relax just a stone's throw from the tourist hubbubThe biggest and most visited beaches on the island lie right in the south of Gran Canaria. If the hustle and bustle at Playa del Inglés or around Maspalomas gets too much for you, you're bound to feel at home on Playa de Veril. You'll find it to the east of Playa del Inglés and you can even decide during the day to head there at the drop of a hat if you would prefer a bit more space to yourselves.
To get to Playa de Veril, which is also known as Playa de Cochino, or 'Piggies' Beach', you can simply follow signs to Playa de Veril. Unfortunately, as at the other beaches here in the south, there are few places to park. It’s worth looking for one around the numerous hotels at Playa del Inglés, for example. Alternatively you can leave your car at home, as the bus network around Maspalomas is really very dense and that way you don't need to bother with a parking space.
Playa de Veril is basically wheelchair accessible, so you can get onto the beach even with a pushchair, or if you're unsteady on your feet or a wheelchair user. The ramp can be found on the left-hand side of the beach, near the bungalows towards Playa de las Burras. But be aware that the ramp is relatively steep and long, so the benches en route are often taken up, mainly by older visitors to the beach. Those who need a walking aid in particular would be better off with a helping hand to negotiate the path to the beach, especially in the midday heat.
A breakwater divides Playa de Veril into two smaller bays, both of which are covered in the soft, dark sand of Gran Canaria. 'Piggies' Beach' is a bit greener than its desert-like neighbour. The first of the two bays in particular, invites you to relax. The crowd is very mixed here and you'll mainly come across young couples and homosexual couples of all ages. At the end of the second bay to the east there are showers and toilets. Here you can supply yourself with drinks at a small kiosk and secure a lounger for yourself early in the morning. These are facing in just the right direction for you to enjoy a wonderful sunrise.
