At first glance, Playa de Puerto de las Nieves is no beauty. The port and the grey stones on the beach make a dismal first impression. It's only after a while that you notice the gigantic mountains, towering above it all. If you spread out your towel on the more natural beach to the left and look at the mountains, you can almost forget that you are in a small town. This beach is perfect for those looking for a combination of convenience and nature.
Playa de Puerto de las Nieves - Stony beach by a small port nestled in a spellbinding mountain landscapePlaya de Puerto de las Nieves lies in the north of the island of Gran Canaria. The stony beach consists of two bays which are separated by a narrow stone jetty. The larger beach to the right is bordered by a port on the right-hand side. The big express ferries that take you to Tenerife go from there. You don't need to worry about the boats in the bathing area though because it is separated from the area for ships. This means you can easily take a relaxed swim in the clear, shallow water. Since the port also intercepts the sea's waves, you can swim completely undisturbed here.
A small, slightly elevated promenade runs along the bay, and on it you will find several restaurants to provide sustenance. If you walk all the way along the promenade, you come to the second bay. This is slightly more natural and is situated right by a mountain, which is also the reason why it has to be closed from time to time, because occasionally there are rock falls. If you are able to get onto this area, you will have a breathtaking view of the surrounding mountains. There is no separate bathing area here, and snorkellers in particular will like the clear water with its beautiful underwater world.
If you want to, you can also enjoy the natural swimming pools just a few hundred metres away. There, sheltered by rock structures, you can swim in calm sea water whilst looking out over the rough sea.
Playa de Puerto de las Nieves is not beautiful at first glance. It's only after spending a while here that you begin to notice the beauty that is masked by the port (especially if one of the ferries has docked) and the stony beach. It takes a little time for the full effect of the mountains, which tower above everything on the left-hand side, the unspoiled smaller beach and the charming promenade to unfurl. But then you can enjoy the perfect combination of tourist resort beach and nature.
