Playa de Amadores - Artificial sandy beach in an idyllic bayOn the south-west coast of the island of Gran Canaria lies the artificially created Playa de Amadores, or ‘lovers' beach’. It lies in the heart of a spectacular rocky landscape, where several hotels have been built. The bay, which is surrounded by breakwaters made out of large, angular stones, has a 500 metre long beach of fine, light sand that is only interrupted by a few stones lying in the water on the right-hand side.
Two promenades run alongside the beach. One lies a little above the sea and is lined with palm trees. Here you can saunter along enjoying the sunshine. The second can be reached via one of the numerous sets of steps leading down to the beach. Playa de Amadores is generally wheelchair accessible because you can get down to the beach via a ramp on the left-hand side. Under the canopies you will find a variety of restaurants and ice cream parlours, as well as shops with beach equipment, beach clothes and souvenirs. There are also toilets and showers in the middle of the beach, although you’ll have to pay to use them.
There are loungers and beach umbrellas on the sand and lifeguards to ensure your safety. Normally their services are not at all necessary though, as the water is so shallow that even small children can splash around in it without getting into difficulty. There’s also a separate bathing area with an Aqua Park on the right-hand side for little ones to let off steam. They can run around in the play area at the same end of the beach too. On the left-hand side you can walk along the breakwater and at the end of it you will find a pedal boat hire facility, which lies behind the separate swimming area.
For adults there are three highlights awaiting on Playa de Amadores - a minigolf course designed and planted with a great deal of attention to detail, a beach bar that holds wild parties in the evenings, and a massage pavilion where you can relax. The good transport links are the icing on the cake. You’ll find a bus stop and a taxi rank right by the beach, so it really has got it all.
