Playa de Taurito - Sandy beach in mountainous landscape with plenty of opportunity for water sports
Playa de Taurito is on the south-west coast of the island of Gran Canaria. The sandy beach is situated between Puerto Rico and Mogán against a mountainous backdrop. On the slopes of the mountains you can see several hotels in the distance, but these do not have much of an impact on the scenery. The sand is greyish and very fine. At the sides of the bay there are also a lot of rocks and stones.
From the car park it’s not far to the steps that lead down to the beach. If, however, you go past the steps on the right, you come straight to the first diving school. Here you can sign up for everything imaginable, from taster courses right up to instructor training programmes. Down the steps is a small promenade, where you will find two further diving schools, a water sports operator and three restaurants, plus several small shops selling beachwear, equipment and souvenirs.
The water sports operator offers a number of ways to spend an exciting day. You can rent a jet ski, kayaks or pedal boats, try out parasailing or have a go at driving a sports boat. All of these are available as a one-off activity or you can purchase a package, which makes each activity considerably cheaper. You can easily fill a whole day this way.
The reef just off the coast is host to an interesting underwater world rich in biodiversity. If you are nervous of diving, you can just go snorkelling instead to gain a first impression. More experienced and advanced divers can even explore a sunken shipwreck off the coast.
On the sands you will find a volleyball court already equipped with a net. However, you do need to bring your own ball with you or buy one in the shops. The lifeguards will keep a watchful eye on your safety all year round. Another highlight of Playa de Taurito is the water park, which is only 200 metres from the beach. There you can have a fun day on the water slides or the big lounger areas, or in one of the many pools. There is a minigolf course next door.
