Playa del Cura - A bay with dark sand and stones
Playa del Cura beach lies close to the town of Puerto Rico on the island of Gran Canaria. The beach is surrounded by mountains with hotel complexes on their slopes. In the immediate vicinity there are also a lot of hotels, one of which is currently being completely renovated. This affects the atmosphere and significantly increases the level of noise on the beach, which means that fewer tourists than usual are spending time on this beach of dark sand bordered by numerous stones.
On the right hand side there is a beach volleyball court, though you do have to bring your own ball if you want to play. If you like action in the water, you can ask the lifeguards located in the middle of the beach to order various items for you from an operator at a neighbouring beach. The range of activities on offer, including banana boats, jet skiing and parasailing, means water sports enthusiasts won’t be bored for a single minute. However, the operator doesn't have a stand with its own personnel in situ.
The area for lying on the beach on either side of the lifeguards provides plenty of space, so anyone who wants to relax under a rented sun umbrella can do so without a problem. What's more, the beach lounger area is divided into smoking and non-smoking sections.
There is a small supermarket round the corner where you can get cool drinks, fruit and bread rolls. But you won’t find anywhere near Playa del Cura where you can buy items of beach equipment or beachwear that you've forgotten to bring with you.
We recommend the beach mainly for guests from the nearby hotels who have no hire car to enable them to visit the significantly more attractive beaches of Playa de Puerto Rico or Playa de Amadores and make use of the wider facilities there.
