Summary of the Beach Inspectors

If you don't want to sacrifice restaurants and wheelchair accessibility in the touristy south of Gran Canaria, then Playa de San Agustín is the place for you. Awarded the ‘Blue Flag’, the mark of quality for beaches, it is the most family-friendly alternative to Maspalomas and Playa del Inglés. In addition, San Agustín is a great beach for bodyboarding, surfing and, further out in the bay, even kitesurfing. Ideal for sports-loving families with older children! One of the top bathing beaches in the Canary Islands with tourist infrastructure.

Playa de San Agustín - Family beach with all the creature comforts

It's with good reason that Maspalomas and Playa del Inglés are at the heart of tourism in Gran Canaria. The wonderfully soft sand by the azure Atlantic stretches right to the sky and the steady breeze makes the sea and beach appear constantly in motion. But if you want to enjoy this all to yourself, you usually have to sacrifice restaurants and wheelchair accessibility. However, here in the south of the island there are a few alternatives for people who know where to look. Playa de San Agustín, which has been awarded the ‘Blue Flag’, the mark of quality for beaches, is probably the most family-friendly option here and is remarkably quiet in low season.

Being a well-developed beach, Playa de San Agustín is accordingly easy to find. Once you get down south, you just have to follow the signs for San Agustín. You might even snag a shady spot in the large car park. The beach is particularly good for older visitors or those with reduced mobility. This is because the route from the car park is wheelchair accessible so you can get onto the beach very quickly and there are no major obstacles to stop you enjoying your day. And if it does get a bit more crowded in peak season, our tip is to head for the private car park of El Capitán Restaurant, where you can begin your day at the beach with a delicious snack or refreshing drink without having to worry about parking. As well as this restaurant, at the other end of the beach you'll find Arena Beach, which is especially child-friendly and even has a play area set up. Here you can enjoy an afternoon snack or fresh ice cream.

The promenade at San Agustín, which connects the two ends of the beach, is very long, but rather narrow in comparison with those of the neighbouring beaches. This means you will quickly find yourself on the beach, which is also very long and split over several bays. Families in particular will be glad of the large lifeguard station, which operates all year round. But don't worry! The lifeguards are rarely called out because the water’s edge is very shallow.

The thing that sports-loving families with older children will like especially, is that San Agustín is good for bodyboarding and surfing, and is considered a great kitesurfing spot a little further out in the bay. Needless to say, the bathing and surfing areas are separated from each other, so even little ones and unconfident swimmers will enjoy venturing into the water. Without hesitation, we would say that this is one of the top bathing beaches with tourist infrastructure in the Canary Islands.
