Dolphin Reef Beach - A green oasis with wild dolphins
Dolphin Reef Beach is situated on the Dead Sea at the southern tip of Israel and is very close to the tourist town of Eilat. The almost 12-kilometre long coastline is Israel’s only access point to the Indian Ocean. This beach is a very special place.
The site at Dolphin Reef
The site at Dolphin Reef is the largest sea enclosure in the world and houses five dolphins, three females and two males. They can leave the enclosure whenever they want. The animals can swim through a gate into the open sea, but can also return. This facility places special importance on the free will of the dolphins. This concept was developed in 1991 when the founders of Dolphin Reef wanted to create a place which sought to move far away from the idea of a dolphinarium and instead to be much more like a type of home for the dolphins. Humans are simply seen as guests here, although the founders of Dolphin Reef wanted to ensure a peaceful relationship between man and animal. The dolphins are therefore not trained and the enclosure is not profit-orientated.
Encounters above and under water
From a jetty you have the amazing opportunity to observe the dolphins, while one of the staff gives you the most interesting facts about the wild animals. Furthermore, there are guided snorkel and diving tours on offer in order to experience the beautiful creatures close up underwater. The staff takes special care to ensure that the visitors do not touch the dolphins or the other sea creatures. Most of the time the marine mammals are so curious and sociable that they come closer all by themselves.
Spend time amongst wonderful scenery
Even from the beach of the enclosure you have a good view of the dolphins who occasionally shoot through the water. Furthermore, there is breathtaking scenery here with the red mountains of Jordan in the background and the crystal clear water of the Red Sea. Many people gather at the beach under the large awnings and relax in the warm breeze.
There is a noticeably relaxed approach at Dolphin Beach. The easygoing attitude of the employees has a similar effect on the guests. The beach is mostly made up of pebbles, but is nevertheless kept very clean. Since this is also an ecological installation, the sea urchins, corals, and shells that you often find here are not removed. You should therefore perhaps bring appropriate footwear with you to this beach, although the sea urchins are usually not found directly on the shore.
Relaxation and therapy
Further highlights of Dolphin Reef are the so-called relaxation pools. These are made up of three different pools which are filled with freshwater, saltwater from the Red Sea, and the very salty and beneficial water from the Dead Sea. A further special aspect of the site is the dolphin therapy, which consists of a number of encounters with the dolphins and it is mostly severely disabled children who come here for therapeutic reasons. The children can experience positive moments through the therapy and build up their self-confidence. Even here the sea mammals move of their own free will and are not forced to do anything.
You can also get food and drink at Dolphin Reef. The Reef Bar is directly at the beach and provides lovingly-prepared meals and freshly-pressed juices. The friendly service rounds off the great beach experience.
The beach closes between 17:00 and 19:00 depending on the time of year and you should plan enough in your budget for the entry fee and for further activities.
