Galim Beach - The surfing beach of Haifa
Galim Beach, also known as Backdoor Beach, is one of the city beaches of Haifa and is located in the south-western district of Bat Galim near the port. The beach is located at the foot of Mount Carmel, which you have a good view of from the beach. Galim Beach is famous throughout Israel for its great waves and is one of the best surfing spots in the country. The beach is easy to reach on foot, by public transport or by car. There is a free car park nearby.
How well equipped is Galim beach?
Galim Beach is divided into two separate beaches. The larger beach area is used solely as a swimming area, the other as a water-sports area. It is very pleasant to swim here because of the breakwater. On the beach there is a playground, a basketball court and many wooden pavilions providing shade. Lifeguards ensure your safety all year round. As well as toilets and showers, you will also find on the beach a small kiosk, where you can purchase snacks and drinks.
The swimming area of the beach is mainly frequented by the residents of Haifa. As the beach is not one of the nicest in the city, it attracts fewer tourists and the locals have the beach mostly to themselves.
Water-sports at Galim Beach
Bat Galim means "daughter of the waves" and Galim Beach is known for its great waves and winds. At the beach you will find a special area for water-sports and you will see surfers here all year round. The beach is known for having the best tube-riding waves in the country. Due to the breakwater the force of the waves is not as strong and makes surfing pleasant. During the winter months the south-west offshore winds also attract many kite- and windsurfers.
There is no surf school at the beach and therefore Galim Beach cannot be recommended for beginners. You can, however, hire equipment directly at the beach. The best thing to do is ask at the Backdoor Kiosk about it.
