Msambweni Beach – Luxury and remoteness
Msambweni Beach is a fine sandy dream beach 30 minutes south of the lively Diani Beach. The contrast between these two dream beaches, however, could not be more striking. The wide, spacious Msambweni Beach is a real insider tip where you will not find many beach holidaymakers.
Time seems to stand still at Msambweni Beach and here you still have one of the last chances to experience the original and spontaneous interaction of the Kenyans with the beach and sea, as you will not find any tourists or the otherwise omnipresent Beach Boys at Msambweni Beach. The only people you will see at this dream beach are the local fishermen from the nearby village going about their daily routine, fishing, trading their catch and even preparing it under the palm trees. Msambweni Beach is only a short walk from the village and there are several picturesque paths winding through the dense jungle. At the beach there are mainly privately owned houses, but these blend in nicely with the thick forest and there are only two luxury holiday complexes here, to be found at either end of the beach. If you are not a guest of the hotel you can get snacks and drinks here, but only in the off-season, as in the main season these are only available to hotel guests.
Msambweni Beach – Reef walks, snorkelling and absolute relaxation
The most popular activity at Msambweni Beach is relaxing and this is easy thanks to the lack of external distractions. Also popular are walks to the reef which are of course only possible at low tide. There are also small pools with warm water here which are ideal for splashing about. Also directly at the reef you can admire sea creatures such as crabs and starfish. If you are walking along the reef you should watch out for the freshwater springs, of which there are several here at the beach.
High tide is ideal for snorkelling and swimming and if you want to go a bit further out where there is much more to be seen underwater, you can always ask the local fishermen, some of whom are happy to take holidaymakers on their wooden boats for a fee.
If you are looking for luxury then Msambweni Beach is also right for you, particularly at the spa hotel at the northern end of the beach which offers exclusive rooms, a tastefully decorated restaurant and several pools with superb views of the beach, as well as a spa area. Equipment for various water sports, such as kayaking and stand-up paddling, can be hired here even if you are not a guest of the hotel. For the more advanced surfers kiteboarding is also possible at Msambweni Beach.
