Manda Bay
There is an exclusive hotel complex in Manda Bay where you also can eat even if you are not a guest of the hotel. However, we would still recommend bringing your own food and drink if you are going to the beach. Manda Bay is perfect for snorkelling and if you are lucky you might even spot whale sharks. Nearby is the old town of Lamu which is effectively an outdoor museum for those wanting to know more about the commercial history of the eastern African coast.

Manda Bay - Robinson Crusoe style dream beach

Situated at the rear of Manda Island, Manda Bay is a real dream bay with fine, white sand. Manda is the smallest of the three paradise islands in the Lamu archipelago where there is no fresh water and little infrastructure, with the exception of the airport.

The only hotel is the very exclusive Manda Bay Lodge. To the east and south of this stretches a fantastic sandy beach which is the only thing in sight, meaning that you have to bring your own food and drink with you. This all gives you the feeling of being stranded like Robinson Crusoe. Manda Bay can only be reached by boat and the trip is not particularly cheap. However, you will travel past mangrove forests where you can spot many different kinds of animals.

Manda Bay – Mangroves, coral reefs and history

When you are packing your food and drink to come to Manda Bay, you should also remember to pack your snorkelling equipment, as you will find here one of the most interesting snorkelling locations of the entire Lamu archipelago. It is the natural habitat of numerous kinds of fish, sea turtles and dolphins. If you are very lucky, you might even spot an impressive whale shark.
\r\n If you are interested in culture, then you should pay a visit to the old town of the main island of Lamu. In one of the oldest towns on the eastern African coast you can best experience the history of the region. Lamu can be reached by boat in about 30 minutes.
