Manda Beach
As the beach is situated on the west side of Manda, you can enjoy a great view of the sunset from here, which is unusual for Kenya. Even more spectacular is the view of the sunset from a traditional Dhow. In the evenings there are also more unusual activities at Manda Beach, such as cinema evenings and star gazing.

Manda Beach – Not far from the action and yet very remote

\r\n\r\n

Just opposite the very well known Shela Beach on Lamu Island stretches the wide and long Manda Beach on Manda, the smallest of the three main islands of the Lamu archipelago. Although the beach can be reached cheaply and easily from Lamu in less than five minutes by boat, very few people come to this dream beach. At the northern end of this picturesque sandy beach at low tide you can walk along mangrove forests and observe numerous sea creatures close up.

\r\n\r\n

There are some private properties with impressive villas to the south of the tributary to the open sea, but the beach itself is open to the public. Manda Beach can only be reached by boat and the trip itself is an experience because of the great views.

Kiting, snorkelling and donkey rides

\r\n\r\n

Manda Beach is great for water-sports and it is one of the most popular kite-boarding spots of the Lamu archipelago. This is the reason why at Mango Beach you can find one of the largest kite-boarding schools offering a variety of modern equipment as well as snorkelling and diving tours. The area between Manda and Lamu is not one of the most popular spots for snorkelling, but you can still observe many fish and perhaps sea turtles here, if you are lucky. There are other water-sports providers offering trips on banana boats and jet-skis together with other fun water activities.

\r\n\r\n

A less energetic activity is a ride on one of the many donkeys here. These so-called “Lamu taxis” bring tourists to even the most remote spots on the island.

\r\n\r\n

Sunset and open-air cinema at Manda Beach

\r\n\r\n

Manda Beach is in the west of the island of Manda, which makes it one of only a few beaches in Kenya with a wonderful view of the sunset. If that is not picturesque enough for you, then you can also set off at the end of the day on one of the traditional Dhows and sail along the bay enjoying the view, not only of the sunset but also of the tranquil, dream island of Manda.

\r\n\r\n

Also in the evenings there is excitement at the southern end of Manda beach, where a small restaurant offers unusual activities such as star gazing and cinema evenings.

\r\n\r\n

If you are interested in culture, then not far from Manda Beach the old town of Lamu is an open-air museum waiting to be discovered. The narrow alleyways and centuries-old buildings illustrate the commercial trading history of Eastern Arica so well that they were added to the UNESCO World Heritage list. A stroll through one of the oldest towns of the Eastern African coast is a fantastic experience.
