Wang Long Bay - White, sandy, natural beach hidden between huge cliffs
The small beach of Wang Long Bay, also called Wang Long Lagoon, is in the south of the holiday island of Koh Phi Phi Don and can only be reached by boat. The lagoon is situated between high cliffs and is not visible from the open sea and you therefore have to know where to look to find this beach. Of course the locals know the bay and will bring you here with their long-tail boats without any problems. You can hire these water-taxis for half a day or for the whole day.
The narrow entrance to the bay is surrounded by steep, very rugged cliffs which form an impressive sight. Near to the cliffs the water is up to 20 metres deep and here you will find a fantastic diving location with fascinating corals and rare fish species. Further into the lagoon the water becomes shallower and is therefore ideal for snorkelling. At low tide the water is in parts so shallow that even the long-tail boats cannot get into or out of the bay and therefore the experienced locals will make sure that their boats leave Wang Long Bay before low tide. The white sandy beach is bordered at the sides by a lot of greenery which also stretches up the steep, rocky cliffs. You can climb the hills at the rear and here you will also find paths to climb up the cliffs, although these usually finish in a dead end. At the beach is the Wang Long Cave which in former times provided shelter for the fishermen when the weather was bad. You can get there via a ladder, but it is not advisable to go into the cave because of the danger of falling rocks.
