From the distance Loh Lana Bay looks like a really picturesque bay with a nice, calm, long sandy beach, and hardly any buildings. However, when you take a closer look, you will notice that this bay has a problem with rubbish. Although there are some areas where it is not too bad, in general it is simply too much to be able to enjoy the idyllic setting. If you feel that you are able to ignore this problem, you might feel OK at this bay, but otherwise you should look for another beach to go to.
Loh Lana Bay - Picturesque bay, but with a rubbish problem
Loh Lana Bay is on the west side of Ko Phi Phi in the north of the island. The easiest and quickest way to get here is by long-tail taxi boat from Lo Dalam Beach in the centre of Koh Phi Phi. There is also a path leading to here, but it takes about an hour and you will need appropriate footwear.
Loh Lana Bay used to be a really nice bay and still is when seen from a distance. It has the shape of a horseshoe and the light-coloured sandy beach is surrounded on both sides by lush green trees. In the background are striking rock cliffs, on the other side of which the bay of Lo Dalam is to be found.
There used to be a hotel complex here, but that was destroyed in 2004 by the tsunami which destroyed half of the island of Koh Phi Phi when it hit the coast of Thailand. Although nature has recovered in Loh Lana Bay since then, the hotel has not been rebuilt.
As nobody feels responsible for keeping Loh Lana Bay tidy, there is rubbish to be found almost everywhere here, above all inland but also on the beach and even under the water. It is mainly the travel groups who go by speedboats from Phuket to the smaller Phi-Phi island of Ko Phi Phi Leh and often stop for lunch here who leave their rubbish behind. Ironically, they are now coming here less and less because of the rubbish problem and choosing to go somewhere else instead. This beach can hardly be recommended because of the rubbish problem and the unattractive hotel ruins in the background. If that does not put you off, you will find that Loh Lana Bay is a fairly deserted place, as the only people coming here now are mainly from the nearby camping site, or locals who live close by.
