Maya Bay - Wonderful sandy bay between enormous cliffs
The probably best known beach of Thailand is Maya Bay which is on Koh Phi Phi Lei, the smaller of the two Phi Phi Islands. In the year 2000 the film “The Beach” with Leonardo Di Caprio was filmed in Maya Bay. Before that it was already a popular destination for day trips with its beautiful landscape and fantastic diving spots around the bay. But with the success of the film version of the novel “The Beach”, the small beach became world- famous and thousands of people come here daily on boat trips from the larger island of Koh Phi Phi Don, from Phuket and from the mainland around Krabi, as well as from other islands. As Koh Phi Phi Lei is part of the national park, you currently have to pay 200 Baht entrance fee. This can be paid on arrival or already in advance to the trip organiser.
The beach has fine, white sand and the crystal clear water shimmers in a wonderful turquoise colour. From the beach it looks as if the bay is almost completely surrounded by the rugged high cliffs. In the background are palm-trees, mangroves and other tropical plants. Although not visible from the beach, here you can find a snack bar, toilets and a path leading to Losama Bay which is on the opposite side. It is in this bay that the large boats arrive. It is also a great diving location and from the small wooden terrace you have a fantastic view of the distinctive, small, round island which is situated in the bay.Apart from the main beach in Maya Bay, there are also two smaller beaches which you can only reach by swimming there. This is well worth the effort as hardly anybody comes here, whereas at the main beach it is already so crowded before lunchtime that you will hardly be able to find a space to spread out your towel. If you want to enjoy Maya Beach without the crowds then you have get up early to arrive between 7 and 9 o’clock, but you will find that the beach is still in the shade at that time
