Tanote Bay - The holiday-monopoly on the east coast PhanganTanote Bay in the east of the island of Koh Tao is great for divers and sun-seekers, as well as for anybody looking for some peace and quiet. A beach holiday in this lovely bay promises a relaxed stay without any hustle and bustle. You will not find many more beaches in this part of the island, as most beach action takes place in the west and south.
The idyllic bay with its curved, beige-coloured, sandy beach is only a few hundred metres long and is enclosed at both ends by huge rocks which provide an unusual setting. At the northern end large rocks are scattered along the beach, but you can easily climb though these.
Like everywhere on Koh Tao, divers will get their money’s worth at Tanote Bay. At the beach there are two diving schools where you can book courses for all levels, from beginners up to Dive Master. However, Tanote Bay has an unusual feature, as the best time for diving here is from April to August when the water is very calm and you can swim to the reef of this beach and you do not need a boat for diving. In August the season reaches its peak and it is certainly possible that all the accommodation is fully booked. In April and May it is extremely hot here, which you should take into consideration when planning your holidays.
In the winter months the atmosphere is very relaxed here and you can enjoy a few great days in a cosy deckchair in this remote bay. There is not much happening in the evenings, but this is appreciated by families with children, as well as couples of all nationalities.
It is only the journey to this dream bay which is a bit tricky and where care is needed. The road is very sandy, making it dangerous if you are coming here by scooter. Taxi-boats and pick-ups are the alternatives for getting here. The road is currently being improved and by the end of 2016 it should be possible to reach the beach easily, even for wheelchair users.
