Ao Leuk Beach - Classic sandy beach
There are not many beaches on the east coast of Koh Tao, but Ao Leuk is one of them. It spans the short distance between Tanote und Sai Daeng and can be reached by scooter via a rather adventurous route.
The first impression of the beach is that it is very beautiful. There are huge palm-trees on the way to the small bay and you will see nice parasols and sun-loungers scattered along the beach. However, the loungers are as good as empty, as there are hardly any people here even in the main season.
There is plenty of room on the comparatively wide beach which is 300 metres in length. Ao Leuk is enclosed by large rocks at both ends and there is also a restaurant at each end from where you have a great view of the entire bay.
The sand is coarse and clean, but from October to March you will see seaweed washed up from the sea, as it is stormier at that time of the year. During the rest of the year the water is nicely shallow and clear and it is worth bringing your snorkelling equipment, as there is a small reef nearby.
The beach is ideal for those looking for peace and quiet, and apart from the restaurant and a couple of huts at the hill there is nothing here. For any kind of activities you need to go to one of the larger places on Koh Tao.
