Chalok Baan Kao Beach - The quiet beach of Koh Tao
Among the best features of Koh Tao are its lovely, quiet, small bays. Some bays however are quiet, but still have things going on there and Chalok Baan Kao is one of them. The second-largest beach on the island is at the most southern end and can easily be reached by scooter via the tarmacked main road. The town of Chalok Baan Kao is always very busy. You will see numerous holidaymakers browsing in the nice shops and enjoying delicious food in one of the many restaurants.
The beach is directly behind the road, but it is still very quiet here. This beach is not regarded as one of the nicest because the water is extremely shallow and the sea goes so far out that you need to walk for quite a time to reach the water’s edge. Depending on the moon, however, there are days when swimming can be good fun here.
The beach attracts holidaymakers because of its very relaxed atmosphere. You can hear soft reggae coming from the loudspeakers of the cosy bars and you can really switch off here.
At the western and eastern ends of the bay you will find two more small bays which are worth exploring, namely Tattoo Bay and Pirates Bay. Pirates Bay can be reached via a small wooden path and has a superb bar with a pirate-like atmosphere. In spite of the poor swimming conditions, Chalok Baan Kao is a beach where families and backpackers alike will enjoy the relaxed atmosphere. In addition, the beach is a fantastic base to explore further small dream bays by scooter.
