The former fishing village of Colonia Sant Jordi is on a small peninsular at the southern tip of the island. It has become very popular with the tourists as it is very close to some of the nicest beaches of Majorca. This coastal town has nearly 3,000 inhabitants and is part of the district of Ses Salines. It is surrounded by saline lakes and a flat natural landscape.
Some of the old architecture to be found on Majorca is best admired inland in nearby Santanyi and Campos.Colonia. On the other hand, Sant Jordi, is dominated by modern hotels and apartment blocks where mainly German and British tourists stay. The small sports and fishing harbour of Port de Campos attracts many well-off locals from Palma who enjoy the fresh fish dishes in the beach restaurants and taking a boat trip. You can see that a lot of money has been spent on the new tree-lined harbour promenade, where you have a large choice of restaurants and cafés.
At the harbour you can book a trip to the nearby island of Sa Cabrera. This island is a nature reserve, but you can also admire it and its archipelago at the information centre of the Parque Nacional de Cabrera in Colonia Sant Jordi. The aquarium is well worth visiting and with its 200 species gives an idea of the huge diversity to be found in the underwater world.
Colonia Sant Jordi is not only the ideal starting point for both walking and bike tours, but it is also especially popular because of its proximity to many wonderful and varied beaches in a beautiful natural setting. North of the tourist town in the middle of natural surroundings are the popular beaches of Playa D'es Moli de S'Estany, Playa Es Pregons and Playa Es Trenc. In the south is the town beach of Playa d’es Port which is right next to the harbour area and a little bit further away is Playa des Carbó with two fine sandy bays with shimmering turquoise water. For those who do not mind walking, all of these can easily be reached from Colonia de Sant Jordi.
