Cala Portixol - Small relaxing bay for residents of PalmaThe charm of the old fishing village of Portixol has been preserved, even though the district has long been part of the island city of Palma and not far off, large apartment blocks tower into the sky. For several years Portixol has been one of the fashionable areas of Palma and attracts young people, not just from the surrounding area. The little bay of Cala Portixol is lined with small fishing cottages, which are gradually being restored. They are home to trendy little restaurants and cafés. In front of them in the bay, which is sheltered by large rocks, lies a small beach of fine sand that is interspersed with pebbles in places.
The Portixol district is right next to a harbour and is just three kilometres from the centre of Palma. Walking along the promenade you reach the old town in about 20 minutes. There are parking spaces for cars in the surrounding streets. The modern promenade has separate lanes for bicycles and reaches all the way to the large holiday resort of Es Arenal to the south-east. Modern wooden sunshades on the coastal path catch the eye and there are also numerous benches with a view over the sea.
This beach is very popular with the people of Palma, especially with young people. It is a hub not only for those who are looking for relaxation and want to cool off in the sea, but also for joggers, cyclists and inline skaters. The menus of the surrounding restaurants are clearly influenced by the local cuisine and range from simple tapas to delicious paella.
Tourists come here too to experience an authentic slice of island life. However, Cala Portixol is not particularly adapted to the needs of summer holidaymakers. There are no water sports operators or lifeguards on this beach.
