Masirah Island Resort Beach - Caters for families, kite-surfing, surfing and windsurfing on a single beach
So far Masirah Island is still the insider's tip where Oman is concerned. The beach at Masirah Island Resort on the east coast of the island, which boasts ideal conditions for water sports virtually the whole year round, is just as little known.
Masirah Island Resort is in the north-eastern part of Masirah Island and can be reached by car from Ras Hilf, the largest town on the island, in just a few minutes. There are plenty of parking spaces along the beach and in the grounds of the hotel complex. As on many of the Oman beaches, you can drive right onto the beach in your car. However, you should only do this in a car with four-wheel drive.
At first glance, the four kilometre long grey beach doesn't look as inviting as the beautifully laid-out Masirah Island Resort. The resort is designed for families, with its beautiful grounds, pool and volleyball court. Outside the resort is the long, wide Masirah Island Resort beach, which is particularly interesting for water sport enthusiasts. There is kite-surfing here almost all year round. Between June and August, however, the waves get bigger and bigger until they are three to five metres high, when only pros will want to kite-surf. During these months other water sport enthusiasts can surf and windsurf without a problem.
The Resort showers and toilets can be used if you are a guest there. If not there are unfortunately no similar facilities at the beach. Nor are there any shops. So it's a good idea to pack all the necessities in your hire car and set up camp in one of the stone beach huts, spending the day there with your picnic. Otherwise, the hotel offers fishing trips or tours on which you can watch the island bird life. Because the largest known nesting colony of loggerhead turtles is located on the east coast of Masirah Island, that side of the island is largely unexploited, so as to protect the animals.
