Playa de las Américas is the tourist capital of Tenerife: nowhere else on the Canaries are there as many hotel beds as here. However, the high density of tourists has its reasons and its advantages too. The beaches of Las Américas are some of the most beautiful sandy beaches to be found in Tenerife, and an unrivalled infrastructure and a diverse range of restaurants, water sports and entertainment has sprung up around them.
Holidaymakers from all over Europe and beyond come to holiday on the beach here in the south of Tenerife, which offers a pleasant climate all year round. In winter more and more older people are coming to escape the cold. Things hot up in summer especially though, when teenagers and young adults turn not only the beach of Playa de las Américas into a party Mecca, but also party wildly along the local "party mile", which is tightly packed with bars and nightclubs. The two popular beach clubs "Monkey Beach" and "Papagayo" are at Playa de Troya and the atmosphere both inside and in front of them is often buzzing with loud music all day long.
But there are also quieter corners in this lively resort, which only sprang up in the mid-sixties and then underwent rapid development. The many pedestrian streets invite you to stroll through them and families appreciate the relaxing beaches of Las Américas for their safe, bather-friendly conditions. It's also worth taking a trip into the mostly barren, but idyllic natural interior.
On the beach of Las Américas the scenery is dominated by the long promenade in the background, which links all the beaches here and continues on to the beaches of Costa Adeje and Los Cristianos. The beaches themselves generally consist of well-kept, fine sand that is a joy to lie on and bathers are sheltered by breakwaters in the water. Windsurfing and kiting have little place here, but in exchange you will find a wide range of motorised water sports, including jet skiing, banana boats and parasailing, on the beaches of Las Américas. At Playa Honda surfers will find the best surfing conditions for their water sport in the whole of the south of Tenerife, and divers can hire equipment on Playa de las Vistas beach.
