Surfing is the main attraction here. Playa Honda is ideal if you are a surfer, or would like to try surfing, or just enjoy watching. Surf schools offer courses and equipment for hire. At the promenade there are shops, restaurants, cafés and bars from where you can watch the action from a safe distance. However, for sunbathing and swimming the neighbouring beaches are better. Although Playa Honda is mainly sand, there are lots of stones on the beach and swimming is rarely relaxed here due to the large number of surfers in the water.
Playa Honda - Sandy beach with lots of stones and good surfing conditions
Playa Honda, also known as Playa El Cabecito, is one of the many beaches of the popular holiday resort of Playa de las Américas towards the south of the west coast of Tenerife. Among surfers the beach is also known as "El Dedo", meaning "finger", thanks to the prominent rock which protrudes like a finger into the sea at the spot where the surfing conditions are best.
If you would like to surf somewhere in the south of the island, then Playa Honda is ideal. The beach is very popular among surfers and numerous surf schools and outlets can be found here. If the swell is right, the reef in front of the beach provides very good waves, some of which can be quite big. Care is also needed though, as now and then there are poisonous jellyfish in the sea here.
For the non-surfers there is also plenty to do. On the wide promenade at the back of Playa Honda you can take it easy in one of the restaurants, cafés or bars. From this promenade, which connects all the beaches of this area, you can enjoy your food and drink and watch the action on the sea.
For sunbathing and swimming the conditions are not ideal, as stones, rocks and pebbles cover a large part of the beach area. Also at the water's edge it is difficult to relax because of the numerous surfers. On the other hand you will find children’s playgrounds, trampolines, massage benches and a lot more nearby.
