  1. General information

El Médano is a district within the municipality of Granadilla de Abona on the south-east coast of Tenerife. Its popularity is mainly due to the long, sandy beaches of El Médano, where the strong and steady winds create ideal conditions for windsurfing and kite surfing. Surfers very much dominate the scene in the water and on the beach and there are numerous surf schools, surf shops and even special hostels and hotels for surfers. The proximity to Tenerife South Airport also makes El Médano attractive for short getaways. The fact that even in peak season the number of holidaymakers doesn't outstrip the number of locals ensures that the resort doesn't seem overrun by tourists.

The central square of El Médano lies right by the harbour and offers a clear view of the vast ocean. A market is held regularly here and the concentration of cafés, restaurants and bars in the surrounding streets and alleys is particularly high. If you walk towards the sea, on the left you can see the harbour with its long quay wall, which reaches far out into the water providing a nice place to pass the time. A pedestrian zone with some restaurants and shops leads to it.

The beach of El Médano also begins right off the market place. Playa del Médano is a bathing beach that lies in the centre of the resort and merges seamlessly with Playa de Leocadio Machado to the south-west, where the sea and sky are filled with the colourful sails and kites of surfers. Together, these two El Médano beaches form an approximately three kilometre long stretch of sand that extends to Montaña Roja, the big red rock, which is seated majestically above everything on the horizon. The long beach promenade runs parallel to the beach and stretches right to the outskirts of the resort. Here several surf schools have been established, along with hotels, cafés and restaurants.

El Médano is the top spot in Tenerife for wind and kite surfers. There is a full range of courses and equipment, and on the beach, in the hostels and hotels, and in the bars you will meet many, mostly young, people from across Europe and beyond who share your enthusiasm for kiting and surfing. If you prefer a relaxing beach holiday you'll find just what you're looking for at the beaches in the neighbouring bays. Montaña Roja, with the nature reserve surrounding it, is a fantastic destination for a mountain hike for nature enthusiasts. From there you have a fantastic view of the sea, the coast and the beaches of El Médano.
