Summary of the Beach Inspectors
After an adventurous journey via the narrow, winding coastal road, you will find a nice, black sandy beach which you can reach by walking from the car park through a short tunnel through the hillside. Playa Arena Negra is at the foot of a steep cliff and is ideal for relaxing once the sun appears over the mountain in the afternoon. The waves here can be high and the currents strong, so if you prefer a sheltered, relaxed splash, then the small outdoor pool next to the car park is your best option.

Playa Arena Negra - Black sandy beach underneath steep cliffs

Are you looking for a quiet beach with black sand? Playa Arena Negra, which is also known under the names of Playa de Mesa del Mar and Playa de la Arena, is just the one for you. Situated in the north of the island, it can be reached via a steep and winding coastal road leading to the village of Mesa del Mar which gives the beach its name.

Once you have reached the beach you will probably need to take a deep breath after the long and winding journey. You can then relax at the outdoor pool which is just next to the car park. There are also showers, toilets and clean wooden areas to lie on. At high tide the waves crash over the quay wall, creating waves in an otherwise calm pool.

To reach the beach you have to go through a tunnel through the hillside. On arrival you will find lots of room to spread out with amenities nearby. The tides and currents occasionally wash up large quantities of seaweed, and unfortunately also rubbish. There is a promenade which goes around the beach and continues to the cliffs and rocks.

Signs at the beach explicitly warn about the danger of falling rocks and there are nets for protection hanging from the cliff face and at the promenade. Although the bay is sheltered by the cliffs at the side, the waves can be high and the currents strong. Therefore, care has to be taken whilst swimming especially as there are no lifeguards. The best time to go to this beach is after lunchtime, as in the mornings it can be still fairly cool and breezy while the sun is still making its way over the mountain in the background.
